Workshops

Organic livestock and the global animal production debates: it’s time to raise our voices.

Introduction

Workshops are independently organised one or more sessions during the Organic World Congress. Workshops allow researchers, farmers, experts and students to meet face-to-face and have interactive discussions.

Workshops address various topics by extending the content of the 4 Tracks through case studies and group discussion.

Detailed Information

Main Topics

The main global and local challenges of organic livestock systems.

The four organic principles health, ecology, fairness and care in animal husbandry.

The missing link to achieve all four at the same time.

First steps to develop a common “manifesto” of the global organic livestock community.

Global organic livestock has manifold faces. It has great success stories and even greater challenges, in particular if we aim at fulfilling our different promises like animal welfare, ecological sustainability and food security all at once. Furthermore, we are facing similar societal requests and doubts as conventional animal production, and we might have to give answers, admit our challenges and show our strengths.

This workshop aims at (i) recapitulation of the challenges we are facing, (ii) debating how close we are with livestock husbandry to the four organic principles and (iii) develop a common vision of how to get even closer to them.

Furthermore, the workshop aims at initiating a process of developing a common statement of the global organic animal community in order to show our spirit and profiles in the contemporary debates about the future of livestock. This process is thought to be continued in an international organic livestock conference, September 2025 in Switzerland.

  • Insight into Challenges: Participants will understand global and local challenges in organic livestock systems.
  • Engagement with Organic Principles: Discussions will focus on aligning livestock practices with the four organic principles—health, ecology, fairness, and care.
  • Collaborative Vision: The workshop will initiate the development of a common vision and manifesto for the global organic livestock community.
  • Networking Opportunities: Attendees will connect with like-minded individuals to share experiences and best practices.
  • Future Conference Preparation: Outcomes will contribute to the agenda for the international organic livestock conference in Switzerland in September 2025

Farmers, vets, researchers, and society representatives from all continents.
